Broan 670 Replacement Motor & Parts — The Full Guide
Your 670 is dead or getting loud, and every listing seems to sell you a different part number. Here's why: Broan built the 670 with two different housings — a big one before 1986 and a smaller one after — and the motors are not interchangeable between them. Order the wrong generation's part and it physically will not fit. This page tells you which 670 you own, then gives you its exact part.

The short answer
Label reads 670-G, H, or J? Order 97008320 (full assembly, motor + wheel + plate) — or 97008947 (motor + wheel only) if your plate is still good.
Label reads 670 or 670-A? Order S97012038 — yes, the same number as the Broan 688's motor. Different fan, same motor, because the old 670 shared the big housing family.
Want it quieter, not just fixed? The 690NT or QK60 upgrade kits fit — but only the smaller post-1986 housing. See §8.

01 — 30-second fit check
Answer three things. The model number is stamped on a label inside the housing — pull the grille down and look up (§2 shows exactly where). The housing measurement is the question that actually decides your part, so don't skip it.
02 — Find your model number first
For the 670, the model number alone is only half the answer — you also need the housing size, because Broan changed the housing in 1986 without changing the model number. A 670-G is a different parts animal from a 670-A.
Where to look
Pull the grille straight down a few inches.
Squeeze the two torsion springs together and lift the grille off.
Look inside the housing — the rating label is on the housing wall, near the receptacle the motor plugs into.
Write down the full model including the letter suffix (670-G, 670-A…). For this fan, the suffix is the whole game: it tells you which housing generation you have.
Measure the metal housing itself — not the grille. 7¼″ × 7½″ = post-1986 “D-style” can. 8″ × 8¼″ = pre-1986 “A-style” can. If the label and the measurement ever disagree, trust the measurement: it's what the part has to physically fit.
If your box measures 8″ × 8¼″ instead, you have the older A-style housing — different parts (§3), and neither upgrade kit in §8 fits it.
03 — Two housings, two part families
This is the section the rest of the page depends on. Broan's own parts catalog is blunt: the two housing styles' parts are not interchangeable. Everything below is split by housing generation — find your row, ignore the other one.

Full fan assembly — motor + wheel + mounting plate
For 670-G, H, and J. The whole unit, pre-assembled: unplug, release the motor plate, and the new one snaps in. Best if the plate is bent or corroded, or you want the fewest steps overhead.
For 670-G, H, and J with a plate that's flat and rust-free. You unbolt the old motor from its plate (two nuts) and mount this one on it, on the ground — not overhead.
Lowest-cost genuine repair for D-style fans
Replace the wheel with the motor — Broan says do both together when bearings go
The surprise of this page: the old 670's motor is the same part number as the Broan 688's motor. Same big-housing family, same motor. It does not fit 670-G, H, or J — that's the mix-up that fills the forums.

Housing and damper for A-style: no longer available
⚠ Unverified — read before you trust a listing: some Amazon descriptions claim the S97012026 assembly fits the 670 and 671. Broan's catalog does not list either model for S97012026 — that claim is reseller copy, not Broan. Buy the 670 on the numbers above, not on a marketplace compatibility list.

What to do instead
670-G, H, J — and someone sells you S97012038
✕ NO
That's the A-style motor. Your D-style fan takes 97008947 / 97008320. Same brand, wrong generation.
670 or 670-A — and someone sells you 97008947 / 97008320
✕ NO
The reverse mistake. Your fan takes S97012038. The generations' parts are not interchangeable — Broan's words.
Any 670, sold an S97012026 assembly
✕ NOT BROAN-CONFIRMED
Reseller descriptions claim it; Broan's catalog doesn't list the 670 for it. Buy on §3's numbers.
Broan 671 (any revision)
✕ NO
Fan + light sibling with its own motors (97008513 / 97008948). Its page is next in this site's queue — but the §8 upgrade kits do fit it.
Broan 688 / 689 / 663
? HALF TRUE
Those fans share S97012038 — but only with the A-style 670. A D-style 670 shares nothing with them. See the Broan 688 page on this site.
NuTone 763RLN / Cenipar S0503B000 fans
✕ NO
Completely different assembly. That fan has its own page on this site.
Broan 682 ductless fan
✕ NO
Duct-free circulation fan with a charcoal filter — no duct, no damper, different everything.
Any model not in the §4 list
? UNTESTED
Treat unlisted as “doesn't fit” until a Broan source says otherwise. The 670's two-generation trap is exactly why guessing fails.
* The 3.5-sones figure comes from Broan's product listing; the spec sheet's ratings table didn't survive text extraction, so we cite the listing rather than pretend we read the sheet's table. See §12.

07 — Diagnose before you buy
Tap your symptom. Half of “dead fan” calls are a $0 fix — do those checks before any part goes in a cart.
08 — Repair, upgrade, or replace the whole fan?
🔧 Just fix it — §3's numbers
Housing is solid and rust-free
You liked how it worked when it worked
Cheapest path back to a working fan
Reality check: a new motor in a 670 is still a 50 CFM / 3.5-sone fan. Fixed ≠ quieter. And for an A-style fan, remember the housing and damper are no longer available — if either is shot, the repair path ends here.
⬆ Upgrade it — 690NT or QK60 ✓ fit (D-style only)
690NT: 60 CFM at 3.0 sones — Broan claims up to 50% less sound, 20% more airflow
QK60: 60 CFM at 2.5 sones — the quieter of the two kits
Both fit only the 7¼″ × 7½″ D-style housing — measure first
Both also fit 671, 688, 689, NuTone 693/695/696N, Nautilus N671/N688
A-style fan with a dead housing or damper — those parts are gone for good
You want 80+ CFM or a humidity sensor — no kit gets a 670 there
That's a bigger job (drywall, duct, wiring). Honest call: if the housing is sound, it almost never pencils out vs. the two options on the left.
09 — Swap it: tools & step-by-step
⚠ Power first — properly. The 670's manual doesn't say “flip the wall switch.” It says disconnect power and lock out the service panel so nobody can turn it back on while your hands are in the housing. If anything inside looks damaged or scorched, stop and get a qualified person — that's Broan's instruction too, not just ours.
Tools — mercifully short list
Step ladderFlat screwdriverVacuum + dusting brushFlashlight / headlampTape measure (for the §1 check)That's it — no wiring tools, the motor plugs in
The swap (per Broan's instruction manual for the 670)
Kill and lock out the powerBreaker off at the panel, locked/tagged out. Test the switch — the fan must not respond.
Drop the grillePull it down, squeeze the two torsion springs together, and lift it clear. Set it aside for a wash (§10).
Unplug the motorThe motor cord plugs into a receptacle inside the housing. Pull the plug — there are no wire nuts to undo.
Free the motor plate — the 670's own trickFind the single tab on the motor plate, next to the receptacle. Push up near the tab while pushing out on the side of the housing — or insert a straight-blade screwdriver into the slot in the housing next to the tab and twist. The plate releases; there's no screw to remove on this model.
Inspect before you install anythingVacuum the housing out. Check: housing secure and corrosion-free, receptacle intact, damper swinging freely. Damage here = stop, qualified person. (A-style owners: if the housing or damper is the problem, there is no replacement part — see §8.)
Motor-only kit? Do the swap on the groundRemove the two nuts holding the old motor and wheel to the plate. Push the new wheel onto the new motor shaft so it's flush with the shaft end, then refit with the two nuts. Don't do this overhead.
Fit the assembly in reverseInsert the two motor-plate tabs into the housing slots, pivot the plate up until the third tab snaps into its slot, and make sure the tabs hold it securely. Plug the motor in.
Test, then grillePower back on, run the fan, listen. Only then squeeze the springs and pop the grille back. Keep wires inside the wiring box — a wire pinched by the plate is a shock hazard, and Broan warns about it explicitly.
10 — Maintenance: the one rule people break
Never oil this motor. Ever.
The 670's motor is permanently lubricated and sealed. It never needs oil, and Broan is explicit: if the bearings are making excessive or unusual noise, replace the motor with the exact service motor — and replace the impeller at the same time. Oiling a sealed motor doesn't revive it; it gums it up and shortens what's left of its life.
Cleaning — twice a year is plenty
Grille: wash with mild detergent, rinse, dry fully. No abrasives, no steel wool.
Interior: power off, unplug the motor, vacuum the housing and wheel with a dusting-brush attachment. Never immerse metal or electrical parts in water.
Wheel: a dust-caked wheel is the #1 cause of “runs but weak” — clean it before you blame the motor.
Damper: confirm the 3″ damper flap moves freely while you're in there. If it detached, re-insert it by squeezing the connector top-to-bottom and guiding the flap posts into their holders — the horizontal rib goes on the outside.
Construction dust: keep drywall spray and construction dust off the power unit — it's how bearings die young.
11 — FAQ
My 670 is a 670-G. Which part do I order?
97008320 for the full assembly (motor + wheel + plate), or 97008947 for motor + wheel only if your plate is flat and rust-free. Do not order S97012038 — that's the older housing's motor.
My 670 has no letter, or it's a 670-A. Same answer?
No — the opposite one. 670 and 670-A take S97012038 (the same number as the Broan 688's motor). Your housing is the bigger 8″ × 8¼″ A-style can, and the D-style parts won't fit it.
Amazon says S97012026 fits the 670. Is that right?
Not according to Broan. S97012026 is the 688-family assembly, and Broan's catalog doesn't list the 670 (or 671) for it. Marketplace compatibility lists are written by sellers, not by Broan — buy on §3's numbers.
What about a 670-B, C, D, E, or F?
Broan's catalog spells out only 670/670-A and 670-G,H,J. Don't guess from the letter — measure the housing. 8″ × 8¼″ → A-style parts; 7¼″ × 7½″ → D-style parts. The measurement is the answer the catalog doesn't give you.
Is the 671 the same fan with a light?
Close, but not the same parts. The 671 is the fan + light sibling (70 CFM / 6.0 sones) with its own motors — 97008513 for 671/671-A, 97008948 for 671-G,H,J. It shares the D-style housing and the 99020292 wheel with the 670-G,H,J, and it takes the same §8 upgrade kits. Its own page is next on this site.
Can I make my 670 quieter without replacing the whole fan?
Yes, if you have the D-style housing: the 690NT kit (60 CFM, 3.0 sones) or the QK60 kit (60 CFM, 2.5 sones). Both are in §8. If you have the A-style housing, neither kit fits — that's a whole-fan replacement conversation.
Can I replace just the blower wheel?
Yes. D-style: 99020292. A-style: 99110446 — but check the motor shaft first: knurled shaft takes 99110630, D-shaped shaft takes 99110379. And if the bearings are the problem, Broan says replace motor and wheel together anyway.
My motor hums but the wheel barely turns. Oil it?
No — never. The motor is sealed and permanently lubricated. A stiff wheel is usually dust build-up (clean it, §10) or worn bearings, and worn bearings mean replacing the motor and wheel together.
The grille is yellowed / cracked. What fits?
97006651 — the 10″ × 10″ grille assembly with springs, listed for all 670 models. There's also an optional white metal grille, 97011308.

Verified Oct 24, 2026. Flagged as unverified or single-source on this page, deliberately: the S97012026-fits-670 claim (reseller descriptions only, not in Broan's catalog); the 670-B through 670-F revision mapping (the catalog doesn't spell it out — the page uses a measure-first rule instead of a guess); the 3.5-sones rating (Broan product listing only — the spec sheet's ratings table didn't survive text extraction); and the exact motor RPM (not reliably published by Broan). If Broan publishes any of these, this page gets updated — not before.
